Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST or SGOT)
This test measures the level of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), an enzyme found primarily in the liver and heart. When there is liver damage, the AST level increases. Several conditions can damage the liver, causing elevated AST levels. These include viral hepatitis, taking certain medications, and several non-liver conditions. AST and ALT are considered to be two of the most important tests to detect liver injury, although ALT is more specific for the liver than is AST and is more commonly increased than is AST. Test results may take 1-2 business days after you order online and visit lab.
