Immunization, typically done through vaccination, is effective when a person's immune system has been fortified against a particular disease by building up antibodies that fight the disease. It is recommended that children be vaccinated based on a defined schedule for vaccine preventable diseases such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and tetanus. Many United States primary schools require proof of immunization.  Additionally health care providers are required to show proof of immunization status or negative test results for diseases including hepatitis B and HIV as an ongoing job requirement.  Up-to-date immunization is also required for immigration purposes and international travel.
