For individuals with celiac disease, their immune system responds not to bacteria and viruses but instead to gluten in their diet (found in common grains such as wheat and barley.) The laboratory blood for celiac disease analyzes for the presence of the following antibodies associated with the disease:
Immunoglobulin A
Deamidated Gliadin Abs
t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
This screening is the most sensitive test available for celiac disease. If antibody levels turn out to be high, the individual most likely has celiac disease. However, there are certain conditions that can cause a false positive result. It is critical that an individual must currently be on a gluten containing diet for the antibody tests to be accurate.
