HTLV testing may be used to help identify or rule out HTLV as the cause for certain conditions such as : nervous system disorders, Leukemia, or Lymphoma. HTLV is typically spread through sexual contact, IV drug use, and exposure to infected blood. During pregnancy or breast feeding the virus may be passed on from the mother to their infant.

HTLV rarely shows any symptoms, however it can still be passed on even when no symptoms are present. This test is recommended for any individual who has multiple sexual partners; especially those from HTLV prevalent areas such as SW Japan, the Caribbean, SE U.S and parts of Africa, is an IV drug user, has shared needles, or has had a blood transfusion.
