Fructosamine testing may be used to assist with monitoring blood glucose levels as it reflects the average of blood glucose levels over the past 2 to 3 weeks. This test may be used in conjunction with the HbA1c test or may be used independently. The test may be used independently in individuals who have a shortened RBC lifespan, such as hemolytic anemia. It may also be used when an individual has abnormal forms of hemoglobin such as sickle cell anemia which may affect certain HbA1c methods of testing.
