Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Laboratory: Quest Diagnostics

Adrenocorticotropic hormone ( ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. ACTH helps regulate levels of the hormone cortisol which is released from the adrenal gland. ACTH and cortisol levels are typically tested together to help detect and monitor conditions associated with too much or too little cortisol in the body.

Measuring both ACTH and cortisol levels can help differentiate between some conditions such as, Cushing disease, Addison disease, Hypopituitary , pituitary tumor or adrenal insufficieny, as the ACTH typically goes in the oppostie direction of cortisol levels.
