The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) blood test is used to check for thyroid gland problems. The TSH blood test measures the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and tells the thyroid gland to produce the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T3 and T4 are crucial in controlling your body's metabolism.
Low TSH levels can indicate an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which can cause symptoms such as excessive weight gain, tiredness, constipation, feeling too cold, dry skin, or frequent menstrual cycles.
Elevated TSH levels can indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) which can cause symptoms such as excessive weight loss, rapid heart rate, nervousness, feeling too hot, diarrhea, or irregular menstrual cycles.
TSH levels can also help to determine whether hypothyroidism is due to a damaged thyroid gland or some other cause (for example a problem with the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus; if this is ascertained a Prolactin test should be performed in addition to the TSH.)
The TSH test is the primary test for evaluating thyroid function, frequently ordered with the Thyroid Profile to measure levels and ratio of T3 and T4.
