The thyroid peroxidase (TPO) blood test measures the level of an antibody that is directed against the enzyme thyroid peroxidase. Thyroid peroxidase is made in the thyroid gland and is important in the production of thyroid hormones converting the thyroid hormone T4 to T3.
Most people with chronic thyroiditis have of thyroid peroxidase antibodies in their blood. A blood test that indicates the presence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies may also suggest that a patient's thyroid disease may be caused by an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorders causes your immune system to makes antibodies that mistakenly attack normal tissue, in this case the thyroid, causing inflammation and impaired function. Examples of autoimmune diseases include lupus, Graves' disease, Hashimoto's disease, Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, or pernicious anemia.
The test is also positive in lesser numbers of people with other thyroid diseases. A thyroid peroxidase blood may also be ordered for a pregnant woman to help determine whether her baby is at risk of thyroid disease. |
