The testosterone blood test measures the amount of the male hormone, testosterone, in the blood. Testosterone is produced in a mans testes and adrenal glands. Smaller amounts of testosterone are also produced in a womans ovaries and adrenal glands. In men, testosterone plays a role in the development of male sex organs and sexual characteristics including muscle growth and body hair. Testosterone levels in men affect sex drive, strength, and overall mood. In women, testosterone promotes sex drive.
A healthy persons level of testosterone continues to rise during adulthood until around age 40, and then it gradually decreases. Elevated levels of testosterone are observed in female hirsutism (unwanted hair growth). In males, decreased blood levels of testosterone are associated with hypogonadism (decreased functioning of the testes). Lower levels of testosterone have been linked to diminished sex drive and loss of bone density.
