The sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) blood test measures the amount of this glycoprotein that binds to the sex hormones testosterone and estradiol. SHBG is primarily produced by the liver and secreted into the blood. A SHBG blood typically performed to evaluate a person's hormone levels.
The concern is generally testosterone deficiency in men and excess testosterone production in women. A total testosterone blood test is typically performed with the SHBG blood test. An SHBG blood test can help determine the cause of a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and infertility, when the result of total testosterone blood test are inconclusive or inconsistent with symptoms. In women, small increases in testosterone production can disrupt the balance of hormones and cause problems such as acne, excess hair growth, the absence of a menstrual periods, and infertility.
