Selenium is a mineral found in water and some foods. Selenium is important in very small amounts to maintain a healthy metabolism. Selenium is also thought to have powerful antioxidant properties, protecting your cells from damage, and is currently being studied for the treatment of numerous conditions. Asthma, arthritis, dandruff, and even infertility problems are thought to be helped by Selenium supplements. There is also evidence that selenium may reduce the risk of prostate and colon cancer.
Some diseases associated with low levels of selenium include HIV and Crohn's disease. Selenium exposure in large doses can have very harmful effects. Selenium poisoning is generally due to industrial exposures as selenium is produced as a byproduct of copper refining and is commonly used in the manufacturing of electronics. Symptoms of acute levels of selenium include discoloration of the skin, deformation and loss of nails, loss of hair, and decreased mental alertness.
