Includes a complete blood count (CBC), a complete metabolic profile (CMP) and a urinalysis (UA). These diagnostic tests are a starting point to assess overall health. A CBC measures parameters including red blood cells, white blood cells and hemoglobin. Anemia is a decrease in red blood cells and can occur for a variety of reasons including blood loss, failure of the body to produce enough red blood cells, or destruction of the red blood cells in the body. White blood cells can be elevated in the face of infection or in certain types of cancer. White blood cells and red blood cells could be decreased if there is a problem with the bone marrow, where they are produced. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to body tissues.
A CMP provides information about different organ systems of the body. Some important components of a CMP include blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, uric acid, electrolytes, calcium and phosphorus. Enzymes related to the liver and muscle, proteins including albumin and globulin, and fats including cholesterol and triglycerides are also measured in the CMP.
A urinalysis (UA) provides information about the pH and concentration, or specific gravity, of the urine. Urine is also checked for the presence of glucose, ketones, protein, white blood cells, red blood cells, bilirubin and nitrites. Glucose in the urine can be an indication of diabetes. White blood cells in the urine can be an indication of infection.
