Male Cancer Screening (Basic Health Screening [BHS] plus: PSA+PAP, CEA, AFP, CA 27-29 and CA 19-9)

The Male Cancer Screening is a panel of blood tests that includes a Basic Health Screening and tests to detect antigens and read blood hormone levels. The test is used to provide information regarding indicators for common cancers that affect men, including prostate, testicular, colon, rectal, stomach, pancreas, breast and liver cancer. This information can be used to help determine if cancer is present and to predict cancer risk.

The Basic Health Screening includes a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), a complete blood count (CBC) and a urinalysis. Its purpose is to assess the functionality of the major organs, including the heart, kidneys and liver, as well as the bones, muscles and nerves. The CMP measures electrolyte and fluid balance, glucose (sugar) levels and kidney and liver function. The CBC checks several health indicators, such as red and white blood cell counts, hemoglobin levels and platelet numbers. The urinalysis accurately measures glucose and ketone levels.

The primary purpose of the PSA test is to screen for prostate cancer. High levels may indicate an inflamed or enlarged prostate or the existence of prostate cancer. Testing for prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) provides additional information: If PAP is found in the blood, the prostate may not be functioning normally.

The presence of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the blood may indicate certain kinds of cancers, typically colon and rectal, but sometimes pancreas, breast or lung. Similarly, the presence of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in men may point toward cancer of the stomach, testicles, pancreas or liver. High levels may indicate Hodgkins disease, brain tumors, renal cell cancer or lymphoma. CA 27-29 and CA 19-9 are tumor markers for breast cancer and pancreatic cancer respectively.
