Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT/SGPT)
The ALT blood test measures the level of the enzyme alanine transaminase (ALT) in the blood . ALT is found primarily in the liver, but is also found in smaller amounts in the kidneys, heart, muscles, and pancreas. The ALT test checks how well your liver is working and evaluates its overall health. The ALT test was formerly called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).
ALT is typically measured to determine if the liver is damaged or diseased. If the liver is damaged or diseased, it will release ALT into the blood. Increases in ALT levels are generally caused by liver damage. The ALT blood test can help to identify liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice and liver damage. Elevated ALT levels can also indicate thyroid disease, lead poisoning, polymuositis, heart attack and possibly liver cancer.
The ALT test is generally prescribed by physicians along with other tests for liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and bilirubin; all of which come as part of the Health Testing Centers Basic Health Screening.
