Homocysteine is an amino acid in your blood that our bodies use for energy production. Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by your diet, as well as by genetic factors. Homocysteine is acquired mainly from eating meat whereas folic acid and other B vitamins help break down homocysteine. Studies have shown that high levels of homocysteine in the blood are related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and and osteoporosis.
Clinical trials are under way to test whether lowering homocysteine will reduce such risks. Nonetheless, current findings strongly suggest that testing for homocysteine levels can dramatically improve identifying and addressing these medical conditions at an early stage. |
