Studies have shown that high levels of homocysteine in the blood are related to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and osteoporosis.
Homocysteine is an amino acid in your blood that our bodies use for energy production. Homocysteine levels are strongly influenced by your diet, as well as by genetic factors. Homocysteine is acquired mainly from eating meat whereas folic acid and other B vitamins help break down homocysteine.
Normal levels of homocysteine are between 5 and 15 micromoles per liter. A level of 15 to 30 micromoles per liter is considered moderately elevated. An intermediate elevation is defined as being between 30 and 100 micromoles per liter. Anything higher than 100 micromoles per liter is classified as a severe elevation.
Clinical trials are under way to test whether lowering homocysteine will reduce the risks of coronary heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and osteoporosis. Nonetheless, current findings strongly suggest that testing for homocysteine levels can dramatically improve identifying and addressing these medical conditions at an early stage. |
