Glycohemoglobin Blood Test
The glycohemoglobin blood test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) bound to hemoglobin. The glycohemoglobin test is used primarily to diagnose and monitor diabetes. People who have diabetes or other conditions that increase blood glucose levels have elevated levels of glycohemoglobin. Since glucose stays attached to hemoglobin for the life of the red blood cell (approximately 120 days), the level of glycohemoglobin reflects the average blood glucose level over the past two to three months.
Individuals with diabetes should have their glycohemoglobin measured every 3 to 6 months. Blood glucose levels can change during the day because of diet, exercise, and the level of insulin in the blood. However, the level of glycohemoglobin for a healthy individual should be less than 7%. Glycohemoglobin levels above 9% show poor control and glycohemoglobin levels above 12% may indicate a serious problem.
Lowering glycohemoglobin levels by any amount through a monitoring and management program will improve an individual's chances of staying healthy.
