The FSH blood test measures the amount of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a hormone produced by a gland in the brain. FSH helps control the menstrual cycle and the production of eggs in women. In men FSH helps control in the production of sperm.
FSH levels vary during a woman's menstrual cycle and are highest just before ovulation. In men the level of FSH normally remains constant. FSH levels and other hormone levels are measured in both men and women to diagnose problems with sexual function and fertility.
Normal levels of FSH depend upon your age and sex. For menstruating women a normal amount of FSH in the blood is 5 to 30 mIU/mL. For menopausal or post-menopausal women a normal amount of FSH ranges from 30 to 100 mIU/mL. For men levels of FSH in the blood range from 5 to 20 mIU/mL.
Additional hormone tests are typically done with the FSH test. In men the FSH test is often prescribed with the Testosterone test to evaluate sexual function and fertility. In women the FSH test is typically prescribed with the Estrogens test to evaluate sexual function and fertility (see the Health Testing Centers' Female Hormone Screening).
