Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid produced from cholesterol and secreted by the adrenal glands. DHEA can be easily converted by the body into testosterone and estrogen due to their chemical similarities. This ease of conversion into other hormones has lead to DHEA being called "the mother of all hormones."
Some research has shown DHEA to potentially have anti-aging properties. DHEA production peaks around age 25 in both men and women and declines in with age. DHEA levels in aging individuals tend to be 80% lower than adults at peak production. Preliminary results from French study suggest that DHEA supplements may slow bone loss, improve skin health, and enhance sex drive in aging adults.
