The At-Home Cardio Test Kit is a blood-spot kit for at-home collections. The test provides an amazing amount of health information regarding your heart and blood health from a simple finger stick by checking the following levels:
- High-sensitivity C-reactive protein
- Hemoglobin A1C
- Fasting Insulin
- Fasting Triglycerides
- Total Cholesterol
- LDL, HDL + VLDL
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is produced in the liver. As inflammation occurs in the body, CRP levels rise. Therefore, an hs-CRP blood test that measures this protein in the blood determines if inflammation is occurring anywhere in the body. Recent studies have clearly established that the higher the hs-CRP levels, the higher the risk of having a heart attack. Specifically it has been established that people with the highest hs-CRP levels have twice the risk for heart attack than people with the lowest amounts.
Many informed physicians are now recommending that their patients be tested for hs-CRP when they have their cholesterol checked. However, the hs-CRP test may be even more important to monitor than cholesterol because about half of all heart attacks and strokes occur in people with normal cholesterol.
The fasting insulin test measures insulin levels. While abnormal insulin levels usually indicate diabetes or another problem with the pancreas, measuring insulin levels also reflect heart health. People with high insulin levels usually have low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides (an unhealthy ratio), which puts them at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Further they may have an increased risk of clotting, as well as high blood pressure since insulin causes the kidneys to produce excess angiotension.
The fasting triglycerides test measures the triglycerides in the blood. Knowing your triglyceride to HDL cholesterol ratiowhich should be less than 1helps you know your risk for heart attack. Individuals with a higher ratio have a greater chance of having a heart attack than those with lower ratios.
Both cholesterol tests help determine your risk for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. The tests are considered standard cardiac risk assessments. Knowing your LDL cholesterol is most important for determining your risk of developing heart disease. Most cholesterol medications are based on LDL values, this test can help monitor the efficacy of your treatment or lifestyle changes.
How it works: We mail out the collection kit to the address you provide at checkout. When you receive the package, follow the instructions for specimen collection and then simply mail back the sample in the provided return envelope.
Once the lab receives the sample, the results report will be ready in about a week. When it is available, you will receive the report by email in a PDF. Be sure you include your email address at checkout.
