Beta carotene is an organic compound abundantly found in plants and fruits. Beta carotene is a member of the carotenoids, a group of chemicals responsible for the orange color of many fruits and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. Beta carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A, an antioxidant like vitamins E and C.
Several recent research studies have found a link between higher levels of beta carotene and a reduced risk of disease including diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, age-related macular degeneration and even certain types of cancer. However, there is some indication that high doses of beta carotene can slightly increase the risk of cancer in smokers.
The beta carotene blood test is also performed when a vitamin A deficiency is suspected. Vitamin A helps support numerous biological functions including bone development, vision, reproduction and cell growth. Serious vitamin A deficiencies can even lead to death.
