The amylase blood test measures the amount of this enzyme in the blood. The normal concentration of amylase in the blood is very low. However, if the pancreas, liver, or salivary glands become damaged or diseased amylase is secreted into the blood and urine. A blood amylase test is often ordered when a patient has severe abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite, or nausea, symptoms which could indicate a pancreatic disorder.
The amylase blood test is often ordered along with a lipase blood test in the diagnosis of disorders of the pancreas. The amylase blood test is also used to assess inflammation and swelling in the salivary glands. Further, an amylase blood test is occasionally used to monitor treatment of cancers of the pancreas and as a follow-up after gallstone removal.
